Team 5039 Irish Iron is a FIRST Robotics team based out of St. Patrick's Catholic High School in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Our team, formerly Green Machine Robotics, was formed in the fall of 2013 by Mrs. Laucke after the amalgamation of Sarnia's two catholic high schools - St. Christopher's Catholic Secondary School and St. Patrick's Catholic High School.
2013-2014 Aerial Assist
Our first season in FRC was in 2013-2014. Our team of 13 students and 4 mentors competed at the Waterloo Regional at the University of Waterloo with our robot Wheezy. We finished the 3-day event with a winning record of 7-6-0 and became the Captain of the #8 Alliance. With the 8th and 9th overall picks, we asked Team 4525 Renaissance Robotics, and Team 4069 Lo-Ellen Robotics to join our Alliance.
Unfortunately, our Alliance was bested in 2 games in the Quarterfinals of the Elimination Rounds by the #1 Alliance of Team 4039 MakeShift Robotics, Team 1114 Simbotics, and Team 4907 ThunderStamps.
2014-2015 Recycle Rush
In our second season in FRC, Team 5039 Green Machine Robotics competed at the Windsor-Essex Great Lakes Regional at the University of Windsor from April 1-4, 2015. Teams that played Recycle Rush were not ranked by overall record, instead, they were ranked based on their average Qualification Match score.
With our robot Smokey, Team 5039 ranked 46th with an average Qual Score of 50.3 after 2 days of competition. Unfortunately, we did not rank high enough to select an Alliance, nor were we asked to join an Alliance.
During our third season, our team competed at Greater Toronto Central Regional, and for the first time in 5039's history, we won! This was the year we changed our team name to Irish Iron, and it brought the team luck! We were part of the Red Alliance with teams 3683 Team Dave and 4001 RAMS ROBOTICS, and we moved on to District Championships, during which we were able to move on to World Championships in St. Louis! At World's we placed 27th in our division. This was the year Irish Iron made a comeback.
Moving on to our fourth season, when our upwards spiral took a downwards turn. We competed at Ryerson and Western Universities. At Western we were selected for an alliance with teams 6130 Vipers and 3756 RamFerno, where we lost in the quarterfinals.
2017-2018 Power Up
Now on to the present, with a team consisting of 36 members and 12 mentors. This year we are competing at the University of Western Ontario and Georgian College. Our goals this year are to win at least one of these competitions and advance to District Championships at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, where we hope to regain our victorious streak and advance to World's once again.
